Carbon Sequestration

& Nature-Based Solutions

Circular Economy & Climate Change Certificate of Completion Program

Course Overview

Spring 2025

St. Williams (ON), Canada

 $1500 CDN (see details below)

Nature-based solutions (NBS) through forestry and land use improvement account for the largest proportion and growth of carbon credits. Understanding carbon measurement in a forest, voluntary and regulated carbon markets, and how nature-based carbon offsets are developed is integral to supporting a net-zero strategy for any organization. The Carbon Sequestration & Nature-Based Solutions professional certificate course will provide you access to knowledge, case studies, and tools to navigate climate change challenges for your organization from any level.

This course is uniquely structured for learners to engage in experiential, impact-based education. You will plant a section of the Long Point Eco-Adventures forest based on a sustainable forestry plan with features that add to the carbon uptake at the site. By the end of the 2-day course, you will have highly sought-after knowledge and hands-on experience…and you will have created a positive impact!

Explore the course details by topic below

Net-Zero Carbon Targets, Planning and Measurement Tools

With 182 companies in Canada having committed to net-zero by 2050 – the list of companies looking to the supply chains and solution providers to implement net-zero action continue to grow. Delve into the strategies and measurement tools essential for achieving net-zero carbon targets that could create opportunity in your career to support these initiatives across the country. Explore case studies and the role of carbon sequestration in net-zero strategies.

Carbon Sequestration & the Role of Nature-Based Solutions

Nature-based solutions represent the vast majority of carbon sequestration projects globally (nearly 70% of all voluntary carbon credits). Explore the vital role of nature-based solutions in carbon sequestration, discovering how techniques like afforestation and reforestation contribute to mitigating climate change.

Climate Solution in Action

Be part of the solution. The cohort will be responsible for design and planting a small portion of the sustainable forest at LPEA. Learn how the Miyawaki technique can contribute to concentrates carbon uptake and how this can be translated to other urban and suburban application on private or public land to enhance carbon sequestration.

Carbon Markets, Offsets and Credits

Explore the dynamic world of carbon markets and credits, including the nuances of the regulatory and voluntary markets as businesses and jurisdiction look to tangible offsets to deliver on net-zero commitments. Understand the criteria required to meet various application of carbon credits in net-zero strategies and how it applies at a provincial, national, and international level.

Measuring and Calculating Carbon Uptake

Understand how forests serve as crucial carbon sinks by learning techniques to accurately measure and calculate their carbon uptake utilizing apps, readily available research sites and software tools. By the end of the course, you will have measured the carbon uptake of a forest from field to data output (no forestry or environment science training required).

“This course has broadened my perspective on topics such as carbon sequestration and carbon offsets and the advantages of effective application of such solutions.  The idea of carbon offsets is very innovative, and it was so enlightening to see how more countries have grown towards accepting it and implementing it on bigger scales across the world. We went into the forests to measure their carbon mass. Taking significant decisions to improve the forests to support its wildlife and being one step closer to a net-zero planet is a life-changing journey. Everyone who was a part of this course was super friendly and approachable, yet an adventurous bunch! I had the time of my life and still got to have an academic experience like none other.”
